Return Visit

09 October 2007

Senior Officers of the Hong Kong Fire Brigade were in the UK doing their ADR courses and DGSA examinations in October 2007. They visited the Hazchem Hub in Rugby to gain a practical insight into ADR operations.

Our visitors from Hong Kong were :-

Mr. CHIU Wai-kin
Mr. WONG Ming-hang
Mr. PANG Wai-lam, Philip
Mr. LAI Wai-hei

This was the second year that the Hong Kong Fire Brigade came to Hazchem Network for a practical insight into ADR distribution and the Carriage of Dangerous Goods.

After a full site tour, where the Officers observed the Hazchem Operation in action; they also viewed the Hub safety features, and what to do in the event of a Chemical Spillage by our trained staff. Richard Shreeve of The National Chemical Emergency Centre was on hand to provide insights into the management of chemical incidents via HERS. The Hong Kong Fire Brigade are customers of NCEC data services using ChemData for managing incidents.

As the Hong Kong Officers were interested in Bulk Tankers, so it was with gratitude that Mark Haslam – Managing Director of Suttons Tankers supplied an dedicated Bulk Acid Barrel with, Peter a very experienced Suttons Driver on-hand to explain the workings of a Bulk Chemical Tanker.

Suttons operates the largest shared user bulk road tanker fleet in the UK delivering chemicals, petroleum and gases. Its largest depots are in Cheshire, Teesside, Glasgow, Cumbria, Humberside, Birmingham, South Wales and Essex and this depot network enables Suttons to provide a highly flexible resource solution for its customers.

In addition Suttons operate 4,000 Isotanks that work in both the European short sea market and the Global deep sea market providing ambient and multi-temperature solutions for most of the world's largest chemical manufacturers.

Safety is a fundamental value within Suttons and this is reflected in its focus upon leading safety indicators such as near misses and has been recognised by the UK logistics industry where it has twice been awarded the Motor Transport Safety in Operation award.

Then Rugby Fire Brigade came onsite to wish their colleagues from Hong Kong a warm welcome to Rugby.

The interest in Hazardous Chemical Distribution from Hong Kong indicates how much UK Chemical Manufacturing is being outsourced to India / China and Far East, which is posing its own challenges in shipping the palletized ADR / Hazardous goods via deep-sea to Europe for onward warehousing and transport – Click Here for more information.

The day was useful for the officers from The Hong Kong Fire Brigade learning from the experts in handling Hazardous Goods from Hazchem Network, NCEC, Suttons and The Rugby Fire Brigade – showing how important it is to Network, and how very International is the business of Hazardous Goods Distribution in today’s global market.
