Our Managing Director was again asked to sit as one of the judges for the Motor Transport Awards, something that he enjoys, having been being involved in the logistics sector since the 1980s.

The Motor Transport Award ceremony was hosted at The London Grosvenor, in Hyde Park / Park Lane on the 7th of July. The Motor Transport Awards are arguably one of the major celebrations for the British Road Haulage sector, and this year Ali Karim considered attendance to be close to 2,000.

Apart from the Awards themselves, Motor Transport supported the charity Transaid, which included both an Auction, as well as a fun Casino, which included Roulette, Black Jack and Poker [both "Five Card Stud" and "Texas Hold ‘Em"]. As the dress code for the event was ‘Black Tie’, our Managing Director, who enjoys Crime, Mystery and Thriller fiction [and is a literary judge for The CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger], recalled a line from Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale as he bought his Casino chips from the Transaid team, and headed to play some cards.

"The scent and smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning."

Lady luck was on Karim’s side as he ended up with a nice bottle of Champagne for his troubles.

The other aspect that is very important when attending the Motor Transport Awards, is that you get to see many of your logistics colleagues and friends, in one place, and in an informal setting, with much laughter.

The Master of Ceremonies was BBC’s Jonathan Ross, and aided by the Motor Transport Editor, Steve Hobson, as well as other guest presenters. It was great seeing Steve in great form, following his recent illness.
