In Support of "Lemmium"

13 January 2016

Our Managing Director is a Chartered Scientist registered with The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry [IUPAC], and noticed in the last IUPAC newsletter that IUPAC has admitted elements 113, 115, 117, and 118 to the table's seventh row.

Currently IUPAC are sifting through proposals for names for these 4 new Elements. As the new elements are on the seventh row, they are termed ‘Heavy Metals’; so there is an interesting petition [which has reached over 140.000 people] to name one of the four Elements as “Lemmium”, in memory of Heavy Metal legend ‘Lemmy’.

Hazchem Network support the petition, as our Managing Director has a fondness for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Music. He is a long term Hawkwind Fan, and later Motorhead; the three piece, formed when Lemmy was ejected from Hawkwind in Canada, while the remainder of the band continued with their 1975 North American Tour.

Hawkwind’s most successful track was Silver Machine written by the late Bob Calvert, but vocals were by Lemmy. Silver Machine charted at No 3 in 1971, though Ali Karim’s favourite Hawkwind album always remains the 1973 double live album Space Ritual, which also featured renowned Science Fiction novelist Michael Moorcock.

So with four new [Heavy Metal] Elements being discovered, a petition has been set up, to be passed to IUPAC, suggesting that one of the four heavy metal elements [coming soon to a periodic table] is named "Lemmium", in honour of recently departed Motörhead frontman Ian Fraser Kilmister, aka Lemmy.

Heavy rock lost its most iconic figure over Christmas with the sudden and unexpected death of Ian 'Lemmy' Kilmister.  Lemmy was a force of nature and the very essence of heavy metal.  We believe it is fitting that the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry recommend that one of the four new discovered Heavy Metals in the Periodic table is named Lemmium.  An astronomical object (a star) has been named Lemmy to meet the IUPAC naming recommendations.

The Hard Rockers of Hazchem Network are supporting the naming of Lemmium as one of the 4 new heavy metals, and hope you will add your name to the petition.

It takes less than one minute to sign the petition, which can be accessed here
